Astrophytum asterias

Astrophytum asterias

Monday 29 September 2014

Cactus / Onzuka

This is an Astrophytum myriostigma cv Onzuka.
The plant is degrafted, own-root.
Unfortunately the body shape is elongated.

Sunday 28 September 2014

Cactus / ginsya

This cultivar of Astrophytum myriostigma is called "ginsya", white sands.
I bought 10 seeds and sowed in 2003.
Only 1 plant survives  currently.
The pattern over the body looks like white sands as the name of cultivar.

Saturday 27 September 2014

Cactus / kikkou

I bought 10 seeds of Astrophytum myriostigma cv kikkou, khoyo and sowed in 2003.
Several plants have remained and they have reached to a mature age.
They changed body color whey they were juvenile but no longer.
One of them was in flower yesterday afternoon.

Friday 26 September 2014

Cactus / alonsoi

One of degrafted Turbinicarpus was in flower yesterday.
This one still has had a short grafting stock buried in the potting-mix.
T. alonsoi is a small plant but this one has grown a large plant because of grafted once.

Thursday 25 September 2014

Cactus / hetarochromus

A Therocactus hetarochromus was in flower in the afternoon.
This is the 1st flowering in this season.
Hetarochromus will be in flower several times through spring to autumn.

Wednesday 24 September 2014

Cactus / asterias

More than 10 asterias need repotting.
They have reached to a mature age and pushed 12 cm pots out.
The photo is on of them, having a reddish flower.

Tuesday 23 September 2014

Cactus / strobiformis

This small cactus is a Pelecyphora strobiformis.
I have several grafted flowering size plants but I have never been able to harvest seeds.
This one is propagated from pup- cuttings.
The plant is in a 50 mm square tube.

Sunday 21 September 2014

Cactus / asterias

I am quite sure this one is neither super kabuto nor miracle kabuto.
The pattern of flecking looks like a dream kabuto but the flecking is fluffy and thicker than the dream kabuto.
It comes out from my seeds but I do not have similar parents.
I assume a gene mixed in history has come out on the plant.
The plant is still young, 8 cm  diameter.

Saturday 20 September 2014

Cactus / asterias

This asterias has reached to a mature age and shown Hanazono character.
It was very weak a while but recovered lately after the repotting.
The size is 12 cm diameter.

Friday 19 September 2014

Cactus / humbolditii

One of Mammillaria humbolditii v caespitosas was in flower in this morning.
I bought seeds and sown in 2004.
It has not been a full blooming yet.
I believe the number of flowers will be increased soon.

Thursday 18 September 2014

Cactus / super kabuto

The weather of cool and warm are repeated frequently, which is the evidence of early spring.
Yesterday was warm but it seems a cool day today.
A mature aged super kabuto was in flower yesterday.

Wednesday 17 September 2014

Cactus / ruri kabuto

A ruri(azure) kabuto, one of my favorite asterias cultivars was in flower yesterday.
I bought seeds and sowed in 2004.
Unfortunately just 2 plants, flowering size have been survived.
I have tried to increase numbers.
I am not sure but people said senill gene was mixed in ruti kabuto.

Tuesday 16 September 2014

Cactus / ritteri

A degrafted Aztekium ritteri was in flower yesterday.
I propagated this one from pups grafting onto Pereskiopsis.
Although pups of ritteri are quite hard, it is possible to graft onto Pereskiopsis without  any pressure.
I degrafted this one 2 years ago with a short stock of the Pereskiopsis.
The plant has still relied on the short stock, no development of roots from the scion.
It is very small, 3 cm diameter.

Monday 15 September 2014

Cactus / miracle kabuto

A miracle kabuto was in flower yesterday afternoon.
It was the 1st flowering of miracle kabuto in this season.
This one is not mixed super kabuto gene at all, keeping the original appearance of the miracle kabuto.
All other miracle kabutos will be in flower soon.

Sunday 14 September 2014

Cactus / asterias

An asterias with a reddish flower was in bloom yesterday.
I propagated this one from seed.
I have tried to make a  perfect red flower but it seems to be hard.
The plant is still very small, in 5 cm square tube.

Saturday 13 September 2014

Cactus / aselliformis

Several Pelecyphora aselliformis propagated from cuttings were in flower.
I rooted pup cuttings some years ago.
The photo is one of them.
Rooting of aselliformis is quite easy.
Seedlings of aslliformis are very thin and hard to make a thick body.
The cuttings will be a good way to make a thick plant, I think.

Friday 12 September 2014

Cactus / asterias

It is a clear warm day today.
Several A. asrias were in flower in this morning.
This is one of them.
The plant has reached to a mature age and been showing Hanazono character also.

Thursday 11 September 2014

Cactus / denegrii

One of Obregonia denegrii propagated from seed was in flower yesterday.
I bought and sowed seeds on 28th September 2005.
Seedlings of denegrii grow very slowly.
The plant is still just 8 cm diameter.

Saturday 6 September 2014

Cactus / super kabuto

It is warm day today.
An Astrophytum asterias cv super kabuto was in flower in this morning.
I expect to be able to see more asterias flowers soon.

Friday 5 September 2014

Cactus / variegated asterias

A variegated asterias which was repotted lately was in flower in this afternoon.
This variegated asterias grows slower than normal one but it pushed pots out before the repotting.
I repotted into one size up, 10 cm square pot.
The variegation is well balanced and grown by own-roots.

Wednesday 3 September 2014

Cactus / seedling grafting

It is the time of seedling grafting.
I use various root-stock but Pereskiopsis will be used mainly in this year.
The photo is showing my seedling grafting process.
18 of scions with stocks are kept in a wet-box.

Pereskiopsis cutting are kept in a wet-box as same for 1 week and then starting grafting.
Grafted scions with stocks are kept in the wet-box for 1 more week and completed the grafting process.
Roots of the stocks start to grow when the grafting process is completed.

Tuesday 2 September 2014

Cactus / elongatus

A grafted Ariocarpus  retusus v elongatus has pushed a flowering bud up.
It is spring from 1st of September in here.
I assume the plant has made a misunderstanding of the season.
The plant is very young, sown seed on 1st July 2013 and grafted young seedling.
It means it is 1 year old.
