Astrophytum asterias

Monday 31 March 2014

Cactus / fissuratus

The photo is an Ariocarpus fissuratus propagated from seed by myself.
I sowed seeds on 30th September 2006.
10 seedlings have still survived and 4 of them were in flower yesterday.

Sunday 30 March 2014

Cactus / bicolor

It is one of other Ariocarpus retusu variations, v bicolor n. prov. KMR61.
As I mentioned yesterday, it is hard to tell how much different from jarmilae.

Saturday 29 March 2014

Cactus / jarmilae

I bought 25 seeds of Ariocarpus retusu v jarmilae MM110 and sowed on 31st August 2006.
Several young seedlings were grafted.
The photo is one of them.
I have still kept grafted ones for the harvesting seeds.
Jarmilae is one of retusu variations but it is hard to tell how much different from others.

Friday 28 March 2014

Cactus / asterias

A small asterias was in flower in the afternoon yesterday.
Although the temperature rose to 28 'C, I did not expect any flowers of asterias in this season.
The plant is just 5 cm diameter.

Thursday 27 March 2014

Cactus / kotschoubeyanus

A grafted Ariocarpus kotschoubeyanus f RioVerde has been starting in flower.
I have kept grafted ones for the harvesting seeds.
It will be opened more flowers soon.

Wednesday 26 March 2014

Cactus / Ariocarpus hybrid

The photo is a 1st filial Ariocarpus hybrid, kotschoubeyanus x bravoanus v hintonii which I developed by myself. I sowed seeds on 7th October 2009 and grafted 12 seedlings.
Unfortunately the body size is quite small, may be related hybridization.
The flower color comes from both parents, mixed.

Tuesday 25 March 2014

Cactus / hintonii

3 of grafted Ariocarpus bravoanus v hintoniis were in flower in this afternoon.
I bought 20 seeds and sowed on 31st October 2003.
6 young seedlings were grafted.
I harvested seeds from my plants and  sowed.
I have recognized the growing speed of own-rooted seedlings were very slow.

Saturday 22 March 2014

Cactus / agavoides

One of 12 grafted Ariocarpus agavoides was in flower.
It  has not reached to 2 years old yet.
Tubercles are quite short because of grafted.

Friday 21 March 2014

Cactus / hanazono kabuto

The photo is an Astropytum asterias cv hanazono kabuto.
I grafted a pup showing hanazono character strongly 8 years ago and degrafted it 5 years ago.
The plant relies on own-roots currently.
Flowers are small because of autumn.

Thursday 20 March 2014

Cactus / super kabuto

Flowers of asterias (kabuto) bloomed in autumn are small normally.
This flower of super kabuto is unusually large.
The body size of plant is 13 cm diameter.
You can guess the size of flower.

Wednesday 19 March 2014

Cactus / Astropytum hybrid

The photo is an Astrophytum hybrid, 2nd filial coahuilense x super kabuto which I have developed.
Unfortunately the body size becomes small because of the hybridization.

Tuesday 18 March 2014

Cactus / asterias

I think it is hard to find pure asterias nowadays.
I assume this one was mixed various forms in history by someone and established well as the result.
It is a very good looking asterias.

Monday 17 March 2014

Cactus / asterias

It was a normal asterias (kabuto) when the plant was a juvenile.
The plant has shown the character of "Hanazono" as appeared on the photo.
This one has gotten in the mature age, 14 cm diameter.

Sunday 16 March 2014

Cactus / ruri-kabuto

A ruri-kabuto was in flower.
I assume it will be the last flowering in this season.
This one was in flower several times in this season.
I had collected seeds for the propagation of next spring.

Saturday 15 March 2014

Cactus / miracle kabuto

One of many asterias which were in flower.
I repotted this miracle kabuto last spring after trimmed roots off and washed body by soap.
The growing after the repotting is quite well, 12 cm diameter currently.
I hope it reached to 20 cm diameter in future.

Friday 14 March 2014

Cactus / variegated asterias

Morning and evening have been cool.
Asterias have resumed to be in flower.
This is one of them, a grafted variegated aserais.

Thursday 13 March 2014

Cactus / jarmilae

The photo is a grafted Ariocarpus retusus v jarmilae MM110, was in flower yesterday.
I bought 25 seeds and sowed on 31st August 2006.
Several young seedlings were grafted.
I have still kept them for the purpose of seed harvesting.

Wednesday 12 March 2014

Cactus / furfuraceus

A degrafted Ariocarpus retusu v furfuraceus was in flower in the afternoon.
I sowed seeds on 2nd October 2010 and grafted 2 dozens of very young seedlings on Pereskiosis stocks.
They were degrafted with short stocks in 2012.
The plant in the photo is one of them.

Tuesday 11 March 2014

Cactus / fissuratus

The photo is an other Ariocarpus fissuratus f Big Bend, was in flower this afternoon.
I grafted a pup on an Echinopsis stock some years ago.
The stock has turned to a woody appearance but it seems still alright.

Friday 7 March 2014

Cactus / retusus

I bought seeds of Ariocarpus retusus cv mitsibo (tri-fingers) and sowed on 11th August 2005.
Several young seedlings were grafted.
This is one of them.
It is told that the character of the tri-fingers will appear when the plant was a mature age.
I have waited long time for the change but it seems no hope.
The plant is in flower in this season every year.

Wednesday 5 March 2014

Cactus / bicolor

An other Ariocarpus, retusus v bicolor n. prov. KMR61 was in flower yesterday.
I bought 10 seeds and sowed on 31st August 2006.
Several young seedlings were grafted.
I have still kept them for the harvesting seeds.

Tuesday 4 March 2014

Cactus / fissuraus

This one has been in my greenhouse a quire while.

I bought seeds of Ariocarpus fissuratus f Big Bend and sowed on 31st October 2003.
I grafted several young seedlings on Hylocereus stocks.
I degrafted them in 2007 when the scions grew as large enough.
Since you can not cut the part of fissuratus body because it is hard to stop liquid running out from cutting face, a short vascular bandle of the stock was remained.
I assume the plant relies on own-roots at moment.

The daylight time has been shorter and Aiocarpus have caught the early autumn up, I think.

Saturday 1 March 2014

Cactus / super kabuto

This summer was abnormal. There were 13 days which the temperature of day time exceeded 40 C' in this summer.
It seems the scorcher summer has finished and morning and evening feel a bit cool now.
Astrophytum asterias have still been in flower.
The photo is a super kabuto propagated from a seed.
This super kabuto shows a special character on its areolae.
